Also known as "Pleasant and Delightful" or "A Sailor and His True Love", this song has been performed by artists including Louis Killen, Charlie Bate, Shirley Collins and Show of Hands. Again, Jon Boden learnt this song from Forest School Camps, as I did, and he used it as the first song of his "A Folk Song a Day" project.

LYRICS:
Twas pleasant and delightful one midsummer's morn
And the fields and all the meadows were all covered with corn
And the thrushes and the songbirds sang on every green spray
And the larks they sang melodious at the dawning of the day.
And the larks they sang melodious,
And the larks they sang melodious,
And the larks they sang melodious at the dawning of the day.
A sailor and his true love were walking one day.
Said the sailor to his true love, "I am bound far away.
I am bound for the East Indies where the load cannons roar
I am bound to leave you Nancy, you're the girl that I adore."
Now the ring from off her finger she instantly drew,
Saying, "Take this, dearest William, and my heart it goes too."
And as they were embracing, tears from her eyes fell,
Saying, "May I go along with you?" "Oh no, my love, farewell."
Now the wind's in the rigging and the anchor's aweigh
And the ship she will be sailing at the dawning of the day
And the current is rising on a fast-flowing tide
And if ever I return again, I will make you my bride.
And if ever I return again,
And if ever I return again,
And if ever I return again, I will make you my bride.

This is a great adaptation of Arthuriana and a brilliant narrative album. I love how the queerness of the characters is handled as an integral part of the narrative and plot development without it being the end all be all of the characters themselves. my boy Gawain deserved better though maritarvaniti
