Look at the sad orangutan, the flagship species at the zoo, For though it’s safe from hunting here, you know it doesn’t have a clue Of the vast forests of Sumatra where its ancestors did roam And even if it could return there it would find that they are gone And that amidst the oil plantations hide the last pockets of its home; They’re living on borrowed time, They’re simply living on borrowed time. And if we travel way up North to the ocean decked with snow, Although it may look bleak up here, you know it’s teaming down below; The fish and seals that swim beneath the ice, they are the white bear’s bread, But if it cannot hunt them from the flows the bear will simply go unfed, So with the ice-caps melting as they are, the polar bear will soon be dead; They’re living on borrowed time, They’re simply living on borrowed time. And now the sei and humpback whale and the beluga and the grey, As they were hunted centuries ago, they’re hunted still today; Their meat turns up in sushi restaurants, for we humans can’t abstain; The further threats from offshore drilling and from oil-spills are quite plain And as we grow our plastic island, we’ll never stop to feel their pain; They’re living on borrowed time, They’re simply living on borrowed time. And there are many other species that I don’t have time to name, But if they were to disappear it would be more than just a shame And as we trash this Earth that isn’t ours, well it might be worth a thought That it’s not just the whales and polar bears who in our trap we’ve caught; Condemned by our own climate crisis from which escape it can’t be bought; We’re living on borrowed time, We’re simply living on borrowed time; We’re living on borrowed time, We’re simply living on borrowed time; We’re living on borrowed time, We’re simply living on borrowed time; We’re living on borrowed time, We’re simply living on borrowed time.

In China you can hear the birdsong again, in Venice you can see the fish; The rivers are cleaner and so is the air, but I’m sorry that it came to this, For this healing it wasn’t because we woke up and decided to make and active change; The pandemic that’s giving our living planet hope is a tragedy far from pre-arranged. Well in twenty-twenty we saw on the news the goats in Llandudno in Wales, No people to disturb them, they frolicked about, with joy in their fleecy white tails; And everyone thanked Mother Nature’s kind hand and praised the resilience of Earth; They talked of silver linings, yet at the same time, they failed to see just what it was worth. In Oakland the turkeys are roaming once more and so are the stags in Dhra Dun And all over Europe the dolphins return to the ports, where the water’s now clean; And yet two years on we’ve gone back to our cars and our diet of dairy, lamb and beef, So it seems all the outcomes that everyone cheered were in fact just a momentary relief. We need to be this good all the time, Not just when our lives are on the line; We need to be this good all the time, For in truth our lives are always on the line. A puma’s been sighted in Santiago and wild boar roam freely in Spain And many and animal’s numbers have grown since the natural world can breathe again; And yet despite this, my heart’s not full of job, for instead of taking action where we can, It seems we’d prefer just to turn a blind eye and to bury our heads back in the sand. I’m not saying this new life was worth all the death, I’m not saying that it was ok; These benefits came at too high a cost, human life’s not a price we should pay; What I’m saying is that we should seize every chance to make our own choices now they’re ours, So that when the pandemic’s a thing of the past, we still have the birds and the flowers. For I know we can be this good all the time, Not just when our lives are on the line, Yes, we can make up for this squandered time And ensure that our planet’s not next in line. In China you can hear the birdsong again, in Venice you can see the fish; The rivers are cleaner and so is the air, so let’s make sure we keep it like this, Let’s make sure we keep it like this.

Well it was in the year two-thousand-twenty, When the NHS was doing plenty To stop coronavirus spreading throughout the land, That our leader, bonking Boris told us to lend a hand; He asked us all to stay indoors, Not to visit family, all to help the cause, But whilst all these precautions were his official line, He was partying in Downing Street just having a time. Well it’s good luck Boris Johnson, It’s good luck to you BoJo; You might have made it with your bikes, But I don’t believe that you can win this fight, And it’s good luck Boris Johnson, It’s good luck to you BoJo; You might have made it with your bikes, But I think you should consider my advice And go home. And then in twenty-twenty-one, Whilst we were mourning all those who’d passed on, We found out that our leader had been having these raves, Not caring that the rest of us were out digging graves. As the nation cried, we were stuck inside; As our loved ones died, all the more he lied; As the nation cried, we were stuck inside; As our loved ones died, all the more he lied; Well it’s good luck Boris Johnson, It’s good luck to you BoJo; You might have made it with your bikes, But I don’t believe that you can win this fight, And it’s good luck Boris Johnson, It’s good luck to you BoJo; You might have made it with your bikes, But I think you should consider my advice And go home.. For now in twenty-twenty-two, It seems the truth is catching up to you, For though at first you countered it again and again, You couldn’t hide forever what went down at number ten; So it seems that now you’ve hit a snag, For Sue Gray let the cat out of the bag And I think we can agree that you’re little stuck, Because your policies and strategies prove that you’re a fu - ndamentally unsuitable person to be holding the position of Prime Minister… Well it’s good luck Boris Johnson, It’s good luck to you BoJo; You might have made it with your bikes, But I don’t believe that you can win this fight - And it’s shame ’bout your initials it’s true, Because in my opinion giving head is much more pleasant than you; And it’s good luck Boris Johnson, It’s good luck to you BoJo; You might have made it with your bikes, But I don’t believe that you can win this fight - And it turns out the bikes were Ken’s idea anyway, So listen to me one more time now as I say That it’s good luck Boris Johnson, It’s good luck to you BoJo; You might have made it with Ken’s bikes, But I don’t believe that you can win this fight, And it’s good luck Boris Johnson, It’s good luck to you BoJo; You might have made it with Ken’s bikes, But I think you should consider my advice And go home.

Rainbow 04:29
When I have to correct people to “they” or “she” instead of “he”, When people double-take or look sideways at you and me, When they think we can’t be dating just because we both have breasts, Or imply that our relationship’s less valid than the rest, That’s the rain; But when you sit beside me, hold my hand and smile at me, When we spend a quiet day at home and you bring me cups of tea, When we go out to a party and we both look super queer And we’re surrounded by our friends so there is nothing here to fear, That’s the sun; And rain and sun together make a rainbow. When my colleagues and my family assume that you’re a man And I have to tell them once again that you’re not male and we're both trans And it’s not like it’s the first time, nor the second, nor the third, For because I’m not a cis man, my voice isn’t really heard, That’s the rain; But when you come to see me and you’re wearing that nice dress And you reassure me there’s no one that I have to impress, When you tell me that you love me just for who I really am, Not for what they tell us we should be, for we don’t give a damn, That’s the sun; And rain and sun together make a rainbow, Still I long for a rainbow without the rain. So kiss me now my darling and don’t listen to their hate. If we stand together we are strong and we won’t capitulate. If we show them that our love just makes the world a better place, Maybe one day they will understand and apologise with grace; And then we’ll have made a rainbow without the rain And then we’ll enjoy a rainbow without the rain, But until then I long for a rainbow without the rain.

Said the fox to the wolf, “We’re natural enemies of course, For our food of small mammals comes from the same source.” Said the wolf to the fox, “When you’re hunted by men, With their dogs and their guns, I’m in danger again. And if this were a natural world we’d both be In our packs or our dens, but it isn’t you see, For we’re hunted by men and our habitat’s gone, And we’ll soon be extinct if we don’t get along, So I extend my paw to you friend. Well from this short encounter a friendship did bloom; Soon the fox was a bride and the wolf was a groom, And their unusual union took place in the wood, With all animals present, for they understood That the fox and the wolf were now non-predatory, So the mice and the voles could attend in safety, And a large vegan feast was put on for all guests That appealed to all diets and all interests; They did extend their paws to all friends. And from this one wood a rebellion grew; Soon the birds of the air and the fish joined in too; They all banded together, came up with a plan To rescue the earth from the destruction of man. Now all of the beasts of the land, sky and sea Live together in peace and in sweet harmony, And many a human’s confined to a box, While still in the wood live the wolf and the fox; And they extend their paws to all friends, They extend their paws to all friends.

about

This is Roary Skaista's second EP of original songs, which was greatly delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and thus changed somewhat in scope between inception and release, remaining loosely based around environmental themes as was planned, but with added pandemic grief and anger.
