This lighthearted sea song refers to the Eddystone Lighthouse, a lighthouse off the coast of Devon. It has been sung by Burl Ives, Mary Travers and The Weavers. As with so many of the songs I know, I learnt it at Forest School camps.
lyrics
LYRICS:
My father was the keeper of the Eddystone Light.
And he slept with a mermaid one fine night.
From this union there came three,
A porky and a porpoise and the other was me.
Yo ho ho, the wind blows free,
Oh for a life on the rolling sea.
'Twas late one night I was a-trimmin' of the glim
And singing a verse of an evening hymn
A voice from starboard I heard a shout, "Ahoy"
And there was me mother sitting on the buoy.
Yo ho ho, the wind blows free,
Oh for a life on the rolling sea.
.
"Oh what has become of me children three?"
Me mother then she asked of me.
"One was exhibited as a talking fish
And the other was served on a chafing dish!"
Yo ho ho, the wind blows free,
Oh for a life on the rolling sea.
The phosphorus flashed in her seaweed hair.
I looked again, but me mother wasn't there.
A voice cam echoing out of the night,
"To hell with the keeper of the Eddystone Light!"
Yo ho ho, the wind blows free,
Oh for a life on the rolling sea.

TTBT has some of my favorite songs written by The Mechs. Iphis is my personal favorite due to its ties with Greek Mythology, but it's definitely an album I have on repeat constantly. yumeinati
