about

This American folk song was probably originally an English ballad or sea shanty. It has been sung most notably by Pete Seeger, but also by The Weavers and by Jon Boden, who learnt it at Forest School Camps as I did and included it in his "Folk Song A Day".

lyrics

LYRICS:

Deep blue sea, Willie, deep blue sea,
Deep blue sea, Willie, deep blue sea,
Deep blue sea, Willie, deep blue sea.
It was Willie what got drownded in the deep blue sea.

Dig his grave with a silver spade,
Dig his grave with a silver spade,
Dig his grave with a silver spade.
It was Willie what got drownded in the deep blue sea.

Sew his shroud with a silken thread,
Sew his shroud with a silken thread,
Sew his shroud with a silken thread.
It was Willie what got drownded in the deep blue sea.

Lower him down on a golden chain,
Lower him down on a golden chain,
Lower him down on a golden chain,
It was Willie what got drownded in the deep blue sea.
